For Course creators and learning website teams

Offline access requirements for education

Offline behavior is a separate development task. An install popup does not download pages, tickets, videos or account data. A same-origin service worker and deliberate caching are needed for the content you intend to support.

The website task for education

A course with repeated study sessions has a practical reason to offer a saved entry point. The useful test is whether a learner can reopen the right course page and sign in, not whether a popup alone increases completion rates.

Choose a narrow offline scope

Identify which information is useful without a connection and safe to store locally. Cache only approved resources and label their freshness. Live availability, payments and submissions still depend on the relevant online systems unless you build a separate offline workflow.

Check hosting control and storage

A service worker must be served from the same origin as the page it controls, with suitable scope. A worker on an unrelated CDN cannot control your builder website. Browser quotas, eviction and private-browsing behavior differ; do not promise permanent cached storage.

Test reconnect behavior explicitly

Background Sync is not universally supported and is not automatic. If your application queues actions, implement retries, conflict handling and a visible unsent state. Test airplane mode, stale data, sign-out and reconnection on your supported devices.

Check the existing website journey

Use a normal learner account, not an administrator session. Open the published site, save it using the browser’s available action, close it and launch from the icon. Check course access and expired-session behavior. On school-managed devices, administrator policy may restrict installation.

Where InstantPWA fits

Use InstantPWA for branded browser install guidance on the published domain where you have custom-code access. Verify the snippet and home-screen launch separately. Offline behavior, notifications, business-system integrations and compliance need their own implementation and review.

Illustrative status wording for a separately built offline feature

An example, not an enabled integration or customer result.

Offline state to implement

Show which approved content is available and when it was last updated; label anything that still needs a connection.

Common questions

Does adding an install popup provide this entire workflow?

Offline behavior is a separate development task. An install popup does not download pages, tickets, videos or account data. A same-origin service worker and deliberate caching are needed for the content you intend to support.

Is a popup view proof of installation or notification permission?

No. A view confirms popup display, not installation. Saving a website and granting notification permission are separate actions, and browser support varies.

Does this replace our existing website or business software?

No. Your website, account access and operational software stay in place. Confirm code permissions on third-party domains and test external handoffs separately.
